From the Editorial Board

Great importance is attached to the development of the natural sciences and, in particular, the mathematical sciences in the state plans of the USSR. Especially rapid development must be given to those branches of mathematical science that are more closely connected than others with people’s practical activity, with the technical sciences, and with physics. Among such branches of mathematics is the theory of differential equations and of integral equations connected with them.

Differential equations are one of the principal means of solving physical and technical problems. In various scientific-research institutes, institutions of higher education, and laboratories of our country, a large army of scientists and engineers formulates differential equations describing concrete physical processes and is engaged in developing methods for solving and studying equations encountered both in classical and in new technology.

However, until now we have had no printed organ uniting work in this direction. In this connection, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR adopted a decision to publish in Minsk, under the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, beginning January 1, 1965, a new All-Union monthly journal, Differential Equations. This journal is to become an organizing center stimulating work on differential and integral equations and, at the same time, to serve as an organ for the exchange of experience on this important question.

The journal will cover various methods for solving and studying differential equations that are of great interest not only for the theory of equations, but also for natural-science and technical applications. At the same time, the journal will publish reference materials related to these methods of theoretical research, surveys, manuscripts, chronicles of scientific life, and bibliography. It may prove possible to create a popularization section in which, at the request of the editorial board, prominent scientists will explain methods for solving technical problems for engineers, as well as a consultation section. Accordingly, the journal will publish articles in the following sections:

1. Analytical theory of differential equations.
2. Stability theory and its applications.
3. Qualitative theory of differential equations.
4. Theory of nonlinear oscillations.

1. Differential and integral equations of mathematical physics and mechanics.

2. Methods of t.f.c.p., in particular methods of operational calculus.

3. Methods for the approximate and numerical solution of differential and integral equations.

4. Questions of the general theory of differential equations that are of interest for applications.

Of course, some time will be required before the journal acquires its own character among other mathematical journals.

We appeal to researchers at scientific institutions, teachers at institutions of higher education, and all persons engaged in the theory and application of differential and integral equations to take an active part in the work of publishing the new journal Differential Equations.
