LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The main results of my article “Basic Boundary-Value Problems of Potential Theory for a Space with an Elliptic Slit. Pressure of an Elliptic Punch on an Elastic Half-Space,” published in Doklady Akademii Nauk SSSR, vol. 176, no. 1, 1967, are based on the Green’s function of a two-sheeted Riemann space with an elliptic line of branching. In constructing this function, A. Sommerfeld’s scheme was used for constructing the Green’s function of a two-sheeted Riemann space whose line of branching is one straight line or two parallel straight lines. Unfortunately, in the general case A. Sommerfeld’s scheme does not yield a harmonic function, and his result for two rectilinear parallel lines of branching is incorrect. Therefore the Green’s function of a two-sheeted Riemann space with an elliptic line of branching given in my work is incorrect, and the main results of the work contain an error.
